Governor Pruce Addresses Security, Vetting, and Law
Governor Pruce provided an update on various security measures including the ongoing vetting of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force and the progress of the Law Enforcement Review. He emphasized the importance of these processes for maintaining public trust and ensuring national security, as well as their role in the territory's overall prosperity.
In a recent address, Governor Pruce detailed several critical security measures, including the vetting of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) and the findings of the Law Enforcement Review. He began his address by paying respects to Jamal Jones and Trevecca Hodge, two long-serving public officers who recently passed, acknowledging their contributions to the community.
Highlighting the vetting process, Governor Pruce addressed public concerns regarding the draft order from the courts, emphasizing that the vetting remains an open and ongoing process, despite temporary enforcement stays. Approximately 100 officers, a third of the RVIPF, have already submitted their vetting forms, indicating significant engagement with the process.
The Governor reassured that the vetting process is designed to ensure the integrity of the police force and to maintain public confidence and safety. He clarified that the vetting form does not request personal identification numbers or passwords, countering some public misconceptions.
On the Law Enforcement Review, conducted by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS), Governor Pruce shared that the review has set a ten-year roadmap to enhance law enforcement and criminal justice capacity in the Virgin Islands. Half of the recommendations from the review have already been initiated, with significant progress noted in areas like improving the 911 Control Centre and developing prison security.
The Governor expressed his commitment to close collaboration with the House of Assembly and the Premier, especially on recommendations with broader implications. He also highlighted the upcoming Anti-Crime Summit as a critical component of a broader strategy to engage government, civil society, and the community in tackling crime comprehensively.
