Governor Pruce Highlights Community's Role in Security

Governor Daniel Pruce recently addressed the Rotary Club of Tortola, sharing valuable insights on the vital role of community engagement in maintaining security across the Virgin Islands. The Governor underscored that while the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) plays a critical role, a secure society is a collective effort, where every individual contributes to the safety of their environment.
This shared responsibility forms the backbone of the Virgin Islands' approach to security, with voluntary organizations such as the Rotary Club, cadets corps, and girl scouts, among others, providing positive pathways for the youth, steering them away from criminality. Governor Pruce announced the relaunch of Crimestoppers, an independent, volunteer-led initiative that offers a confidential hotline for reporting crimes, which has proven successful worldwide.
He also became its Patron, signaling a strong commitment to this cause. The speech touched on the upcoming challenges for the RVIPF, including an increase in crime by 12% in 2024 and the transition to a new Commissioner. To support these changes, the Governor is collaborating with UK experts to enhance marine capability, intelligence work, and emergency response.
The National Security Council (NSC), which includes key government officials, has been meeting more frequently to address security matters, improving the flow of information and strategic planning. Initiatives such as the Joint Task Force and collaborations with the Ministry of Education aim to sever the link between juvenile delinquency and adult criminality.
Moreover, the introduction of new Criminal Procedure Rules by the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court is expected to streamline case management, reduce remand times, and alleviate overcrowding in prisons. Governor Pruce's commitment to security as a top priority remains unwavering.
