The Government of the Virgin Islands has approved an additional $2.5 million electricity subsidy aimed at easing energy costs for residents and businesses across the Territory through the final quarter of the year. Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer, announced the funding during a broadcast of the government programme Virgin Islands Voice.

The allocation, which has received Cabinet approval, will be brought before the House of Assembly as part of a Schedule of Additional Provisions. The financial relief comes amid ongoing volatility in international oil markets and elevated petroleum prices linked to external conflicts and global disruptions.

The newly approved funds add to previous electricity relief initiatives implemented earlier this year, which included a $3 million subsidy distributed across March, April, and May, as well as an additional credit provided in August following sharp spikes in July fuel costs. Minister Rymer noted that customer bills in August highlighted the critical role previous subsidies played in softening the blow of volatile energy costs.

He emphasized that the government acted swiftly to ensure residents would not face similar financial stress heading into the final three months of the year. BVI Electricity Corporation General Manager Dr. Neil Smith explained that the government's intervention directly preserves household disposable income.

He pointed out that consumers clearly recognized the impact of the assistance once it was temporarily removed, demonstrating how essential the price cushions have been in keeping electricity manageable. Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Dr. Wheatley reaffirmed the administration's commitment to balancing fiscal responsibility with direct consumer assistance.

He noted that while external market pressures remain outside the Territory's control, the government will continue monitoring global trends and implementing targeted measures to support households throughout the holiday season.
