Govt Rolls Out 15 Major Projects
The Dr Natalio Wheatley administration has advanced at least 15 major infrastructure projects valued at over $26.6 million over the past twelve months. This surge in public works activity comes as the territory approaches the upcoming general election. The acceleration follows the acquisition of a $100 million loan facility secured in late 2024 to fund key infrastructure developments.
The Dr Natalio Wheatley administration has rolled out or significantly advanced at least 15 major public infrastructure projects over the past 12 months, with publicly disclosed contract values totalling approximately $26.6 million. A review of project announcements from the government and the Recovery and Development Agency between September 2025 and September 2026 reveals a noticeable acceleration in activity.
During this period, numerous major initiatives were awarded contracts, broke ground on construction, or transitioned into advanced design and planning stages across the Virgin Islands. The overall financial commitment is expected to climb substantially higher than the current $26.6 million figure.
Several major developments, including the planned Agricultural Complex and the Immigration Detention Centre, currently only reflect preliminary design or preparatory expenditures, with full construction costs yet to be announced. This rapid expansion represents a marked shift from the earlier years of the administration following its return to office after the April 2023 general election.
RDA records indicate that contracts signed during 2023 totalled around $7 million, including key undertakings like the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre. While preparatory work and procurement continued through 2024 and early 2025, the latest 12-month window reflects a heavy concentration of high-visibility initiatives progressing simultaneously.
The intensification of public works comes as the territory steadily approaches another general election, a period that frequently prompts public discussion regarding the timing of visible capital works. However, the administration has pointed to its wider strategic development agenda and the acquisition of critical financing as the driving factors behind the delivery schedule.
A primary catalyst for the recent project boom is the $100 million loan facility secured by the government in late 2024 to fund long-awaited infrastructural improvements. From that facility, approximately $34.8 million was earmarked specifically for comprehensive road rehabilitation across the territory.
Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has consistently defended the pace of development, framing the activity as the fruition of detailed planning. Speaking during the announcement of the Sabbath Hill road project, Premier Wheatley signalled that the recent wave of activity was just the beginning of a sustained infrastructure overhaul across the territory.
