The H. In an inspiring Fall Convocation ceremony, the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) unveiled a visionary expansion plan that promises to redefine the educational landscape of the British Virgin Islands. Honourable Sharie de Castro, Minister for Education, Youth Affairs, and Sports, and proud HLSCC alumna, announced a series of ambitious initiatives aimed at propelling the institution and its students into a bright future.
The college's budget for 2025 has been notably increased to $10,933,300, thanks to a supplementary appropriation of $1,315,000. This financial boost supports a variety of developmental projects, including the adoption of a cutting-edge student information system, the design of student dormitories, and scholarships to make education more accessible across the territory.
Further emphasizing the expansion of academic offerings, de Castro mentioned the pursuit of accreditation for four-year bachelor’s degrees, enhancements in robotics, coding, and programming education, and the significant bolstering of the Institute of Education. A key strategy in HLSCC's plan involves forging new partnerships with leading UK universities, creating seamless transition opportunities for students to study abroad.
Additionally, the innovative Matriculation and Advancement through Dual Enrolment (MA:DE) Programme is set to bridge the gap between secondary education and higher learning by providing college-level courses to secondary school students. In a groundbreaking move, faculty salary bands will see a 35% increase starting January 2025, a testament to the college's commitment to attracting and retaining top-tier educators.
Building on the momentum of these developments, a recent address by de Castro introduced the 'Full STEAM Ahead: Future Focused, Student Centered' initiative for the 2025-2056 school year, emphasizing a shift towards a more interactive and meaningful educational experience. This approach not only involves substantial investments in infrastructure, teacher training, and resources but also a significant budget increase from 56 million to 67 million dollars—marking the largest single investment in education within a year.
