Hundreds Benefit From District Nine School Event
Around 350 students received essential supplies, uniform vouchers, and grooming services during the annual District Nine Back To School event in Virgin Gorda. The community initiative provided crucial financial relief to parents managing back-to-school expenses during the tourism slow season.
Hundreds of students in the Sister Islands are heading into the new academic year fully equipped following the successful staging of the annual District Nine Back To School event on Virgin Gorda. Hosted at the Jeffrey Caines Sports Arena, the community outreach initiative saw approximately 150 students attend the festivities in person, with 350 out of 400 prepared school bags containing essential supplies distributed to local youths.
With the collaborative support of more than a dozen sponsors, attendees were also provided with practical vouchers covering haircuts, hair washes, uniforms, and meals. District Nine Representative Honourable Vincent Wheatley commended the high turnout and positive atmosphere, describing the gathering as a massive success.
Attendees enjoyed a full slate of activities, which featured bouncy castles, water slides, community and mental wellness aides, and motivational presentations. Officers from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force were also on hand to engage with youngsters and support the day's events.
Honourable Wheatley explained that the Back To School programme was created specifically to alleviate the financial pressures faced by families residing in District Nine, many of whom work within the territory's tourism and hospitality industry. Because the late summer months represent the traditional slow period for visitor arrivals, parents often face significant educational expenses while experiencing reduced household income.
The annual gathering has grown into an essential pillar of support for Virgin Gorda and Anegada families, blending practical assistance with a family-friendly atmosphere. Honourable Wheatley expressed deep appreciation to the corporate sponsors, community volunteers, and residents who joined together to deliver substantial relief to parents and ensure local students start their school term with confidence.
