For many Virgin Islanders, the idea of switching to solar energy sounds appealing. That is, until someone mentions how much it costs. A typical residential solar system can cost around $10,000, a considerable investment for households already dealing with expensive electricity bills.

But what if homeowners could install solar panels without having to find that money upfront? That is the idea behind the government’s Solar Technology Energy Programme (STEP), which Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley announced would be significantly expanded during his October 27 Budget Address. “STEP solar program will target 266 homes within 18 months,” Wheatley announced, outlining plans for government to cover half the typical installation cost while households repay the remaining balance through electricity savings.

The programme, operated through the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC), is designed to make renewable energy more accessible by removing one of the biggest barriers to installing solar panels: the initial expense.
