Igwe Urges Accountability Ahead of 2027

With the 2027 General Elections on the horizon, local political commentator Dickson Igwe is urging residents across the British Virgin Islands to critically evaluate political candidates and reject complacency at the ballot box. In his analysis of the Territory's political landscape, Igwe highlighted the familiar pattern of politicians suddenly exhibiting humility, mingling with the public, and making promises once campaign season approaches.
He noted that many voters, occupied with the daily pressures of making ends meet, often suffer from amnesia regarding unfulfilled commitments made during previous election cycles. Igwe proposed three essential guiding principles that voters must embrace to make responsible choices in the upcoming election: accountability, equity, and consequence.
On accountability, he urged the electorate to question whether candidates have answered for their past policy decisions and track records or whether they have evaded public scrutiny. Regarding equity and fairness, Igwe stressed that voters should assess a candidate's integrity and fair treatment of the general public rather than being swayed by short-term financial inducements or political favors.
He emphasized that the final principle, consequence, remains entirely in the hands of the electorate. According to Igwe, the ballot box serves as the single most effective tool for penalizing poor governance and ensuring genuine accountability for leaders. Addressing the current political environment, Igwe pointed out that dissatisfaction with incumbent leadership requires an active and united response from the public, particularly given existing divisions across the political landscape.
He cautioned that abstaining from voting offers zero value and merely maintains the status quo. Igwe concluded by calling on community members and activists to organize, ensure voter registration, and participate fully on election day to address persistent social and economic challenges facing the Virgin Islands.
