UK Firm Partners with Caribbean to Transform
A UK-based ocean farming company, Seafields Solutions Ltd, is collaborating with Caribbean entities to convert the problematic sargassum seaweed into valuable agricultural products. In partnership with Private Refuse and Garbage Disposal (PRGD) in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), Seafields is set to launch the second phase of a Sargassum Beach Clean-Up Project, scheduled from September 2025 to April 2026. Funded by the World Bank and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), this project seeks to harness ocean-harvesting technology to transform sargassum into bio-stimulants and biochar, products in demand within the agriculture sector.
This initiative is not just about cleaning up the beaches; it's about creating jobs, fostering new revenue streams for communities, and promoting environmental sustainability. The pervasive sargassum problem has had a tangible impact on the Caribbean, leading to mass hotel cancellations and affecting the livelihoods of fishing communities.
The BVI has witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects of sargassum invasions, such as clogged desalination plants and compromised water quality, prompting a search for more enduring solutions.
