Internal Audit Department Observes Internal Audit Month
The Internal Audit Department is marking Internal Audit Month in May under the theme “Internal Audit in Focus: Shifting the Narrative, Reset, Renew, Rebuild,” highlighting its role as an integrated audit function across government. The Internal Audit Department of the Government of the Virgin Islands is observing Internal Audit Month in May under the theme “Internal Audit in Focus: Shifting the Narrative, Reset, Renew, Rebuild.” According to a Government of the Virgin Islands release, the month-long campaign aims to deepen public understanding of the department’s role as an integrated audit function that evaluates internal controls, risk management and governance processes across ministries and departments.
Financial Secretary Jeremiah Frett welcomed the programme, saying it is an important reminder of the department’s responsibilities. “I am pleased to see the month of activities take place, as a reminder of the critical role the department has which is to ensure that the public service is establishing and maintaining control of public resources in a manner which is accountable, efficient, effective and above all, ethical,” Mr.
The campaign will give public servants and members of the wider community direct access to the department’s work. Planned highlights include an Open House Day for public service staff to speak with audit staff, a series of “Did You Know” social media posts sharing fun facts and teachable moments, a Meet the Team video, and several school presentations to introduce young people to internal audit as a career.
Maduro Corea and the department’s board said they are excited to engage colleagues across government and the wider Virgin Islands community. Maduro Corea said her team is “pleased to see this month of activities get off the ground” and that they look forward to explaining the department’s function so people can better appreciate its services; she added that the campaign aims to attract the next generation of internal auditors as a career of choice (BVI Government).
The Internal Audit Department began as a unit in 1991 and was formally created as a department with the passage of the Internal Audit Act, 2011. The Act gives the department a broad mandate to provide assurance and consulting services to public authorities. The department’s stated vision is to “be an innovative driver of positive change while striving to be the premier internal audit function in the Government of the Virgin Islands.” For BVI residents, Internal Audit Month is an opportunity to learn how government spending and services are monitored to protect public resources and promote accountability and ethical governance.
