Levor Lettsome Launches At-Large Candidacy
Levor Lettsome has announced his candidacy for a Territorial At-Large seat under the newly established Virgin Islands Innovative Association. Serving as the organisation's chairman, Lettsome is campaigning on increased government transparency, public engagement, and electoral reforms ahead of the next general election.
Levor Lettsome has announced his candidacy for a Territorial At-Large seat in the next general election, becoming the first declared candidate representing the newly formed Virgin Islands Innovative Association (VIIA). Speaking during an appearance on the Talking Points programme, Lettsome, who chairs the organisation, explained that the VIIA comprises 21 committee members, including executives and general members who oversee its policies, decisions, and community activities.
While he remains the sole declared candidate to date, Lettsome indicated that the association intends to field a broader slate once internal preliminary evaluations and preparations are completed. Lettsome stated that his decision to enter the political arena developed from personal prayer, encouragement from community members, and his track record of assisting residents with practical needs, such as résumé preparation, correspondence, and job searches.
He noted that the VIIA intends to maintain a distinct separation of responsibilities among its candidates, requiring At-Large contenders to focus strictly on national matters while district candidates address constituency-level issues. A central pillar of Lettsome's platform is promoting greater public participation in national governance and restoring civic engagement across the territory.
To improve government transparency, he has proposed the introduction of a National Quarterly General Assembly. This forum would serve to brief Virgin Islands residents on the state of public finances, government expenditures, and upcoming national projects. Additionally, Lettsome voiced support for the introduction of recall legislation and advocated for referendums to be integrated into future constitutional reform processes.
While no official election date has been announced, the territory's next general election is constitutionally due in 2027. Early preparations are already underway, with the Office of the Supervisor of Elections actively recruiting staff to manage polling and counting stations across the British Virgin Islands.
