Lighting Works Continue at A.O. Shirley
Work on a new lighting system at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground is ongoing, with foundation works begun in March 2026. The Virgin Islands Recovery and Development Agency says recently poured concrete will cure for 28 days before pole installation proceeds.
Work to install a new lighting system at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground in Tortola is progressing, the Virgin Islands Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) confirmed on June 4, 2026. The contract for the project, valued at $409,837.67, is being carried out by No Limit Construction Services Ltd., with foundation works having begun in March 2026.
According to the RDA, concrete poured for the lighting foundations will now undergo a standard 28-day curing period to achieve the required strength before installation of the poles can proceed. This step is a routine safety and durability measure and will determine the timing of the next phase of the project.
The RDA said the works form part of the continued installation of a new lighting system intended to improve the functionality of the A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground as a multi-use sporting venue. The ground supports track and field, football, and rugby, and the upgraded lighting is expected to benefit sporting groups, schools, and the wider community that use the facility for training, matches, and events.
For residents and local sporting organisations, finished lighting will allow for extended hours of use, safer evening training and competition, and greater flexibility for scheduling community and youth programmes. Improved lighting can also help the venue meet requirements for hosting larger regional fixtures and tournaments, potentially boosting local activity and small-scale economic benefits tied to events.
No completion date has been provided by the RDA; work is moving forward in stages with safety and structural requirements guiding the schedule. Once the curing period ends and poles are installed, wiring, testing and commissioning of the lighting system will follow before the facility is brought fully online.
