Mathavious Remembered as Purposeful Leader
An official Celebration of Life for the late Dr Robert A. Mathavious, OBE, was held on October 15 at the Multipurpose Sports Complex under the theme ‘Revered at Home • Respected Abroad • Remembered Forever’. Colleagues, including long-serving Kenneth B. Baker, paid tribute to Mathavious’s leadership, mentorship and role in building the Virgin Islands’ financial services reputation; a family service is scheduled for October 16 at Road Town Methodist Church.
The Virgin Islands paid tribute to one of its most influential financial and public service figures on Wednesday, October 15, as colleagues and community members gathered at the Multipurpose Sports Complex for the Official Celebration of Life for the late Dr Robert A. Held under the theme “Revered at Home • Respected Abroad • Remembered Forever,” the event brought together leaders from the financial services sector, public servants and residents to honour a man credited with helping shape the Territory’s regulatory framework and international reputation.
Dr Mathavious died on Sunday, September 14 in the United States after a lengthy illness. Baker, a 25-year veteran of the Financial Services Commission (FSC), described Dr Mathavious as “a sincere man who led with purpose,” noting the environment of mentorship and professional development the late leader built. “I am not the only long-serving employee at the commission, a testament to the space that Mr Math created for those under him to feel valued and to flourish,” Baker said, recalling training opportunities, exposure to responsibilities and the trust Mathavious placed in staff to make meaningful decisions.
Baker added that Dr Mathavious treated employees as competent professionals, encouraging their growth and contribution to both the FSC and the wider industry. “Mr Math was not only sincere and honest, but he also led with integrity and purpose…Mr Math was a man who caused crowds to part when he stepped into a room…people flocked around him to benefit from any wisdom he chose to share,” Baker said.
Dr Mathavious served as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the BVI Financial Services Commission, as Financial Secretary in the public service, and as an inaugural member of the Integrity Commission. He was widely recognised as a pioneer of the Virgin Islands’ financial services industry, instrumental in setting standards that helped secure the Territory’s standing as a respected international financial centre and a key pillar of the local economy.
The family held a private celebration at Road Town Methodist Church on Thursday, October 16; viewing began at 9:00 AM with the service at 10:30 AM. Residents and industry colleagues remembered Dr Mathavious for his steady leadership, mentorship of local talent and lasting contributions to the BVI’s economic and regulatory landscape.
