NHI Review Underway as Premier Praises Scheme

"We have heard you," Wheatley told residents, acknowledging public concerns about the system’s efficiency, cost and long-term sustainability, VINO reported.
He reiterated that protecting access to care remains a core promise of the scheme, saying the NHI was built on "a simple promise that no one in the Virgin Islands should be denied health care because they cannot afford it," a line quoted by BVI News. Officials say the review will proceed in measured phases.
Both VINO and BVI News report that phase one is already underway under an updated Alliance Agreement, with an immediate priority to strengthen how the NHI and the BVI Health Services Authority collect and use data to better understand costs, services delivered and patient outcomes. Officials also promised improvements in customer service, clearer policies and better explanations of benefits, as well as plans to strengthen both local and overseas provider networks.
These steps are framed as part of a push for greater transparency and evidence-based decision-making to stabilise the NHI for the benefit of the Territory’s health system and its users, VINO reported.
