Parametric Windstorm Insurance Comes to BVI

Hyperion Risk Solutions now offers Parametric Windstorm Insurance to Virgin Islands residents, a product that pays out automatically when wind-speed triggers are met and is backed by Lloyd’s. The policy promises faster, deductible-free payouts tailored to a client’s likely maximum hurricane loss, but Hyperion and experts advise it as a complement — not a replacement — to full property cover.

Hyperion Risk Solutions Limited, a BVI-regulated insurance broker, has introduced Parametric Windstorm Insurance to residents of the Virgin Islands, officials announced following an interview with company director Simon W. The product is designed to provide quick, indexed payouts when measurable wind-speed thresholds are reached during a storm, with security provided by Lloyd’s of London.

Parametric insurance differs from traditional indemnity policies because it pays on the occurrence and magnitude of a triggering event rather than on assessed damage. Policyholders choose a coverage limit that reflects their largest probable loss from a hurricane rather than insuring the full rebuild cost.

Hyperion says this flexibility can reduce premiums and eliminate the common problem of underinsurance that many homeowners and businesses face when rebuilding costs rise. Key features for BVI residents include no deductibles, a payout table linked to wind-speed tiers, and use of independent atmospheric data to confirm local maximum sustained winds.

Payments are triggered automatically and, according to Hyperion, are passed to clients within 30 days of confirmation. The payout may be used for any hurricane-related expense — from emergency repairs and temporary accommodation to business continuity costs. Hyperion reports demand across a range of limits — from policies with six-figure limits (for example, US$100,000 with premiums around US$5,000) to requests for multi‑million-dollar cover.

The firm also offers a separate traditional perils policy that carves out wind, so customers can combine parametric wind cover with conventional policies for other risks, potentially lowering overall costs. While the product brings faster liquidity and greater flexibility in the immediate aftermath of a storm, Hyperion and local advisers stress that parametric cover is not a full substitute for comprehensive property insurance.

Homeowners should still consider insurance to 100% of reinstatement cost to protect against all perils and avoid financial gaps. Buyers should also assess basis risk — the possibility that a payout does not precisely match actual losses — and review trigger tiers, location granularity, and policy terms.

Interested residents can contact Hyperion at simon.cross@hyperion-risk.com for rates and more information; the company says it typically responds within 48 hours. As the BVI continues to prepare for hurricane seasons, parametric insurance offers a new tool for faster recovery and improved liquidity for families and businesses, while highlighting the need for well-rounded risk planning.
