Lucianne Rivera, a medical student from the inaugural class of Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) School of Medicine in the British Virgin Islands, has earned widespread recognition for her successful participation in the 11th Annual San Lucas Summer Research Programme at the Centro Médico Episcopal San Lucas in Puerto Rico.
The competitive summer cohort concluded in late June, providing rising college juniors, seniors, and first-year medical students with hands-on clinical research experience. Rivera and her peers conducted specialized clinical research alongside experienced resident physicians across diverse disciplines, including urology, gynaecology, and general surgery.
In a statement celebrating Rivera's accomplishment, PHSU BVI praised her commitment to academic excellence and clinical growth. PHSU BVI recently received an ECFMG Sponsor Note in the World Directory of Medical Schools. This crucial status permits eligible PHSU BVI students and graduates to apply for Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certification, provided all prerequisite criteria are satisfied.
The university is actively contributing to the local healthcare pipeline, with Virgin Islanders Deshoy Ivan Ward and Koiya Rymer currently enrolled as part of the class of 2029. As the inaugural cohort transitions into its second year of medical study, the institution is finalizing preparations to welcome its incoming class.
These developments follow a Memorandum of Understanding signed between PHSU and the Government of the Virgin Islands in May, strengthening their collaborative partnership.
