Police Intensify Hunt for Prison Escapees
Interim Acting Commissioner Richard Ullger says the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force has stepped up its manhunt for two inmates who escaped from His Majesty’s Prison, Balsam Ghut. Patrols have been increased across Road Town and at Tortola Pier Park while officers analyse CCTV and digital evidence and ask the public to report tips.
Interim Acting Commissioner of Police Richard Ullger has confirmed the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is intensifying its search for two inmates who escaped from His Majesty’s Prison at Balsam Ghut. Ullger named the escapees as Jose Almestica and John Burgos and described the manhunt as an urgent priority. "At this time, the force is also doing everything we can do to search for, locate and apprehend the two escapees from His Majesty's Prison," he said, adding that the RVIPF is adopting "new measures and strengthened tactics to ensure they are returned to where they belong." Operations across the territory have been stepped up, with tighter security checks at ports of entry and other strategic locations.
Police said they are reviewing CCTV and other footage as part of a territory-wide effort to track the fugitives and are working closely with digital evidence. "Every investigation now carries a digital footprint," Ullger said. Officers and staff are seizing and retrieving electronic devices and analysing CCTV, body-worn camera footage and other material to build their enquiries and ensure offenders are held to account.
The commissioner urged residents to assist the investigation by providing any information to the RVIPF intelligence unit at 368-9339, or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 800-8477 or from overseas at 284-800-8477. Ullger stressed that "anything you share will be treated with the utmost confidence." Visible patrols have been bolstered following a recent armed robbery at Tortola Pier Park.
Ullger said the RVIPF has increased patrols at the Pier Park and throughout the wider Road Town District "to help reassure the public's concerns and provide a visible security presence." Public safety remains the force's highest priority as officers respond to major incidents across the territory.
Speaking about police performance, Ullger praised officers for their commitment during a demanding period. "In the short time I've been here, I have already witnessed the dedication, commitment, and courage displayed by our officers and staff," he said, and pledged continued transparency and community partnership.
