Natalio Wheatley has announced that he has chosen a prominent cultural figure whose name he intends to bestow upon the proposed National Cultural Arena, though he is keeping the specific identity confidential for the time being. Speaking at a public consultation meeting regarding the project, which remains in its active design phase, Dr.
Wheatley explained that the venue's eventual title will honour an individual who has made monumental and lasting contributions to the Territory's cultural development. While he declined to break the news at the session, he assured attendees that the recognition would be fitting for the scale of the facility.
Wheatley also indicated that the working moniker of Cultural Arena will likely be modified to better communicate the venue's true purpose and broad scope. He noted that the term culture had caused some community members to assume the facility would be dedicated exclusively to traditional folk preservation, such as performances by groups like the Heritage Dancers or fungi bands like the Lashing Dogs.
Instead, the Premier explained that the multi-purpose space is being conceptualized to accommodate the wider creative arts sector. This includes diverse musical genres, theatre productions, dance, literary arts, poetry showcases, and culinary exhibitions. He suggested that renaming the venue would help the public better understand its versatility as a modern arts centre.
Design consultants are currently continuing their work to refine and finalize architectural plans for the facility. Wheatley stated that additional stakeholder sessions will be organized as the development progresses, describing the community feedback and questions received so far as exceptionally valuable to the planning process.
Addressing divided public sentiment regarding government priorities and capital expenditure, Dr. Wheatley made it clear that the administration intends to move forward with the project. He emphasized that all necessary measures will be implemented to safeguard public funds and guarantee the best possible value for money for the people of the Virgin Islands.
