Premier Urges Public Engagement Ahead of Historic
Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has called on residents of the British Virgin Islands to review the Constitutional Review Commission Report before the House of Assembly debates it on September 18. The report, which suggests significant updates to the VI Constitution Order 2007, follows extensive public consultations and marks a crucial step towards greater self-determination.
In a significant call to action, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has encouraged all residents of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) to familiarize themselves with the Constitutional Review Commission Report prior to its discussion in the House of Assembly scheduled for Thursday, September 18.
This pivotal debate aims to address a series of proposals designed to modernize the Virgin Islands Constitution Order 2007, reflecting the territory's evolving needs and aspirations towards self-governance. The Commission, having concluded its work in November 2023, presented its findings to both former governor John Rankin and Premier Wheatley, setting the stage for a comprehensive review.
The document encompasses a wide array of topics, including but not limited to, the introduction of term limits for the Premier, the possibility of directly electing the Premier, reforms to the at-large system, establishment of fixed election dates, and enhancements to human rights and freedom of information. "This report is a milestone in our journey towards self-determination," stated Dr Wheatley, emphasizing the importance of public participation in the democratic process.
The government plans to facilitate this by broadcasting the debate live across multiple platforms, including the House of Assembly’s YouTube channel, the government’s Facebook page, and local radio station ZBVI 780AM. By 2022, the Cabinet had officially appointed the Commission with the task of evaluating the existing constitution and proposing necessary reforms.
