Premier Wheatley Advocates for Year-Round Tourism in

Premier Natalio “Sowande” Wheatley has announced plans to transform the British Virgin Islands into a year-round tourism destination. By introducing new events and diversifying tourism offerings, the government aims to eliminate the traditional slow season, boosting the economy and employment.

In a significant move to revamp the tourism landscape of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), Premier Natalio “Sowande” Wheatley has declared the government’s intention to eliminate the concept of a 'slow season' in the territory’s tourism sector. During an August 13 broadcast of the Virgin Islands Voice programme, Premier Wheatley highlighted the government's strategy to follow the footsteps of other successful Caribbean destinations by fostering a year-round tourism season.

This ambitious plan aims not only to enhance the VI’s largest employment sector but also to ensure a steady influx of tourists throughout the year. Premier Wheatley emphasized the need to maximize the traditionally low-intensity months by introducing a variety of events and activities that would attract visitors even during the hurricane season.

Drawing inspiration from Guyana’s Cricket Carnival and Dominica’s Creole Festival, Wheatley suggested that these types of events could significantly boost tourism by transforming the slowest months into peak visitation periods. The Premier’s vision includes diversifying the VI’s tourism products beyond sailing, encouraging visitors to explore the islands’ many other attractions.

The government’s efforts to extend the tourism season have already shown some progress, with festival celebrations in early August giving a noticeable boost to visitor numbers. However, Premier Wheatley believes more emphasis on creating low-season activities is necessary. He also mentioned the development of the Prospect Reef hotel and other facilities to accommodate business travelers, indicating a holistic approach to enhancing the territory’s tourism infrastructure.

As the BVI prepares to unveil its long-awaited tourism plan in October, the focus on establishing a 12-month tourism season represents a significant shift towards sustainable economic growth. By diversifying its tourism offerings and capitalizing on regional discussions to eliminate the off-season, the BVI sets a course towards becoming a more resilient and attractive destination year-round.

This initiative not only promises to invigorate the local economy but also to secure the BVI’s position as a premier Caribbean destination for all seasons.
