Premier Wheatley Launches Road Town Partnership for
Premier Hon. Dr. Natalio Wheatley has announced the launch of the Road Town Partnership (RTP), a public-private initiative aimed at rejuvenating the capital, Road Town. The partnership seeks to address long-standing infrastructure and aesthetic issues through collaboration among government, business, and community stakeholders.
In an ambitious move to revitalize Road Town, Premier Hon. Natalio Wheatley unveiled the Road Town Partnership (RTP) during a ceremony at the FSC Conference Room on April 4, 2025. The RTP, a public-private partnership, represents a strategic effort to enhance the capital's infrastructure, appearance, and overall appeal to both residents and visitors alike.
For years, the development and maintenance of Road Town have lagged, marred by uncoordinated efforts and neglected urban spaces. The RTP aims to correct these shortcomings through a unified approach that leverages the strengths and resources of government entities, the private sector, and the community at large.
The partnership is modeled on the successful collaboration strategies previously employed in the financial services sector, emphasizing the critical role of community involvement. The RTP's scope will extend from the Prospect Reef roundabout to the Purcell roundabout, touching districts 3, 4, 5, and 6, and will focus on a wide range of improvements including sidewalks, green areas, traffic safety, and coastal water quality, to name a few.
An independent board, co-chaired by a private sector representative and a government representative, will oversee the development and execution of the Road Town Development Plan (RTDP). This board will consist of eleven members from various sectors, demonstrating the comprehensive approach being taken to address the capital's needs.
Additionally, a fifteen-member advisory panel will support the board, ensuring a broad spectrum of input and expertise. Premier Wheatley's announcement comes on the heels of the recently completed Commission of Inquiry (COI), which highlighted the need for strengthened processes and institutions in the Virgin Islands.
The RTP is seen as a step forward in applying these lessons towards sustainable urban development. By embracing partnership and shared responsibility, the initiative aims to transform Road Town into a source of pride for the Virgin Islands, reflecting the community's aspirations and the territory's vibrant culture and heritage.
