Premier Wheatley Outlines Key Territorial Updates
Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley addressed a wide range of national developments during a press conference on 24 July. The updates highlighted constitutional negotiations with the United Kingdom, regional diplomatic engagements, and economic progress in education tourism. He also celebrated cultural milestones, praised track star Adaejah Hodge, and appealed for peace within the community.
Natalio Wheatley has delivered a comprehensive address detailing major diplomatic, constitutional, economic, and cultural developments across the Virgin Islands. Speaking at a press conference, the Premier outlined progress on key government initiatives while reinforcing the Territory's commitment to self-determination, regional solidarity, and local community advancement.
On the diplomatic front, Premier Wheatley reported positive momentum following the first round of constitutional negotiations with the United Kingdom delegation held locally in mid-July. The constructive talks focused on the Territory's constitutional proposals and established the groundwork for a second round of negotiations scheduled to take place in London this September.
The Premier also recapped high-level engagements at the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24), CARICOM, the OECS Authority, and the Caribbean Development Bank, where potential financing for the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport runway expansion was discussed.
Highlighting economic diversification, the Premier emphasized the expanding role of education tourism in the Virgin Islands. He commended the ongoing growth of the Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU-BVI) medical school at the Paraquita Bay campus, which is expanding to 119 students this academic year.
Premier Wheatley noted that with over 90 percent of the student body arriving from abroad, the institution creates vital opportunities for local property owners, hospitality vendors, and service providers. The Premier also touched on key heritage observances, referencing the successful 250th anniversary commemoration of the Long Look Free People and the upcoming centennial remembrance of the Fancy Me maritime tragedy.
Looking ahead, he invited the public to participate in the 72nd Annual Emancipation Festival, celebrated under the theme Culture Rising, Hearts Aligned, VI Festival, One of a Kind, honoring longstanding cultural contributor Ms. Opening on a solemn note, the Premier extended heartfelt condolences to the family of 26-year-old K'Moi Walters and made a passionate appeal against gun violence across the Territory.
He also offered solidarity to neighboring Caribbean nations affected by recent disasters in Venezuela, Guyana, and Saint Lucia. He concluded by celebrating national track star Adaejah Hodge for her record-shattering collegiate performances in the 100m and 200m events, wishing her continued success at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
