Premier Wheatley Urges Unity and Collaboration Amidst
In a call to senior public officers during the government's mid-year review, Premier Natalio D. Wheatley emphasized the need for increased collaboration within the public service to navigate the critical and turbulent times facing the Virgin Islands. This comes in the wake of the new Public Service Management Act, 2024, aiming to streamline governance and enhance the territory's development trajectory.
In a significant address on September 10, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. Wheatley highlighted the crucial juncture at which the British Virgin Islands finds itself during the government's mid-year review. With the territory facing unprecedented challenges, Wheatley's speech to approximately 90 top officials, including ministers, permanent secretaries, and department heads, underscored the necessity of united efforts within the public service to steer the territory through these turbulent times. "These are critical times and a pivotal point in the development of the Virgin Islands," Wheatley stated, stressing the indispensable role of each public officer in these efforts.
Amidst this backdrop, the recent passage of the Public Service Management Act, 2024, was spotlighted. The Act is set to reform the management of the public service significantly, requiring a more integrated approach between ministers and public officers and establishing clear lines of accountability and performance measurement.
The Premier pointed to the National Sustainable Development Plan as a guiding beacon for the territory's future. Adopted in 2022 and launched in 2023, the plan articulates six foundational goals in areas critical to the territory's holistic development: health, education, economy, infrastructure, good governance, and the environment.
This roadmap not only aims to navigate the BVI through its current challenges but also sets a long-term vision for sustainable growth and resilience. Wheatley's call for collaboration comes at a time when the BVI's resilience is tested by both internal and external pressures.
