Progress Made on Modern Asps Rebuild
Government officials and UniteBVI representatives recently toured the Althea Scatliffe Primary School site following the completion of site preparation and finalized architectural designs. The redevelopment project is now advancing to the rerouting of underground sewage and utility infrastructure ahead of construction. Officials reiterated their commitment to delivering a state-of-the-art facility for the community.
The Government of the Virgin Islands and non-profit partner UniteBVI have marked significant progress in the redevelopment of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School (ASPS), moving the historic institution closer to active reconstruction. Following the demolition of the original school structures in April 2023 due to severe safety concerns, extensive site preparation has now concluded.
A delegation comprising officials from the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, alongside representatives from UniteBVI, recently conducted an on-site inspection to review the progress. Work completed to date includes full land clearance and the removal of the old foundation.
With architectural designs officially finalized, the project is advancing to the rerouting of critical underground sewage and utility infrastructure before vertical construction begins. Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Honourable Sharie de Castro, highlighted the cultural and academic significance of the campus while emphasizing the administration's vision for a forward-thinking educational environment.
She stated that the ministry remains dedicated to delivering a modern, state-of-the-art facility that will continue to nurture proud future Striders. District Five Representative and Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer, echoed strong support for the initiative.
He noted that the school has played a central role for generations of community members and reaffirmed his commitment to seeing the institution fully restored. Wheatley also took part in the site visit, describing the redevelopment of ASPS as a top government priority. He noted that the new campus will return stronger, smarter, and better equipped to serve students across the Territory.
The redevelopment is being executed in collaboration with UniteBVI, the non-profit foundation of Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group. The partnership was formalized in January 2024 through a Memorandum of Understanding signed at Maria's by the Sea. Sauda Smith, Executive Trustee at UniteBVI, expressed pride in partnering with the government on the initiative, emphasizing that investing in education remains essential for long-term community development.
