The House of Assembly (HoA) will host a Special Sitting of the Eleventh Sitting of the Second Session of the Fifth House of Assembly today at 10:00 AM in the Assembly Chambers in Road Town to mark the 75th anniversary of the restoration of the Virgin Islands legislature. In an announcement, the HoA said the event “promises to be an insightful and memorable event” as members share reflections on the significance of this diamond jubilee and the Territory’s democratic journey.
The Special Sitting is one of a series of monthlong activities held under the theme: Honouring the Past, Shaping the Future: The Virgin Islands 75 Year Journey Towards Self-Determination! Residents who cannot attend in person are encouraged to follow the proceedings online via the House of Assembly’s official YouTube channel @houseofassemblyvi2922.
The HoA invited the public to tune in and participate in marking what officials describe as an important chapter in the Virgin Islands’ history. The anniversary programme officially began on Sunday, October 2, 2025, with a unifying church service at St George’s Episcopal-Anglican Church.
A range of commemorative events is scheduled throughout the month, with activities set to culminate on November 23, 2025. The Special Sitting provides a formal opportunity for elected representatives, past and present, and the public to acknowledge the milestones and challenges of representative government in the Territory.
For BVI residents, the sitting is more than ceremony: it is a moment to reflect on the institutions that underpin local governance and consider future priorities such as strengthening public accountability, civic participation and the ongoing conversation about self-determination.
Speakers at today’s sitting are expected to touch on these themes while highlighting achievements in areas including public service, lawmaking and community resilience. Attendees are asked to arrive early given limited seating in the chambers. Those watching online should check the House of Assembly channel shortly before 10:00 AM for the live feed.
The HoA’s invitation underscores an aim to make the commemoration inclusive, allowing residents across the Territory and beyond to observe and take part in the 75-year milestone.
