Rally Behind Commonwealth Games Heroes
Organisers have postponed the planned motorcade and recognition ceremony for the Virgin Islands’ Commonwealth Games athletes to Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at 4:00 PM for community comfort and safety. The motorcade will travel from behind the Central Administration Complex to Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park, where athletes including gold medallist Adaejah T. Hodge will be honoured.
Organisers have moved the Virgin Islands’ planned homecoming motorcade and recognition ceremony for Commonwealth Games athletes to Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at 4:00 PM, citing community comfort and safety. The decision was made jointly by the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs & Sports, the British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee (BVIOC) and the BVI Athletics Association (BVIAA).
In a statement, organisers apologised for any inconvenience caused by the change and asked the public to note the new date. The updated motorcade will depart from behind the Central Administration Complex in Road Town and proceed to Cyril B. At the park there will be an official recognition ceremony and a fan meet-and-greet where residents will have an opportunity to celebrate and thank the athletes who represented the Territory on the international stage.
Organisers urged residents and visitors to line the motorcade route waving Virgin Islands flags, making noise and showing their support as the athletes pass. In a Facebook post, officials called for the community to surround the team with “overwhelming BVI love and pride,” describing the event as both a thank-you to competitors and a showcase of national unity.
Among those to be honoured is sprint star Adaejah T. Hodge, who made history in Glasgow by becoming the first female athlete from the Virgin Islands to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal. Hodge captured the women’s 200m title on July 31 with a time of 22.07 seconds and set a Commonwealth Games semifinal record of 22.01 the day before.
Her victory was the Territory’s first-ever gold in the 200m and has helped bolster the BVI’s growing reputation in Caribbean sprinting. Officials have not released a detailed minute-by-minute schedule, but asked the public to arrive early, bring Virgin Islands flags and be prepared to cheer the athletes.
Residents should expect increased foot traffic in Road Town and around Tortola Pier Park during the late-afternoon event and plan accordingly. The motorcade and ceremony aim to give athletes a warm homecoming for their achievements and to unite the Territory in celebration. Organisers expressed confidence that the community will turn out in full force to give the champions the reception they deserve.
