Rda Signs Major Hospital Renovation Contract
The Recovery and Development Agency has awarded a $463,087.20 contract to Supreme Construction Engineering Management Services to renovate the Major Peebles Wing at the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital in Road Town. The works will improve patient flow, accessibility and clinic operations, including a new elevator shaft and upgraded façade, the government said.
The Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) has signed a $463,087.20 contract with Supreme Construction Engineering Management Services for renovations to the Major Peebles Wing of the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital in Road Town, according to a recent government press release. The Major Peebles Wing Clinics Lobby Renovation Project covers a series of upgrades intended to modernise public health facilities and improve the delivery of care across the territory.
Key elements include renovation of the Road Town Clinic lobby, demolition of the existing staircase and construction of a new staircase extending to roof level, and refurbishment of the lobby bathroom. The project also includes improvements to the Outpatient Clinic lobby and the creation of a new storage area.
A new elevator shaft will be constructed from the front entrance stairs to the second level to facilitate installation of an elevator, a change that officials say will help with building accessibility. Additional works will see roof-level office space renovated and the building façade upgraded, with two new external signs installed.
Health and Social Development Minister Vincent Wheatley said the contract signing represents “another significant step in our continued commitment to strengthening the territory’s healthcare infrastructure,” adding that the upgrades are necessary to improve functionality and ease of movement through the facility, enhance the experience of patients and staff, and support clinic operations.
Acting Chief Executive Officer of the BVI Health Services Authority, Dr June Samuel, welcomed the decision, saying the renovations will address long-standing infrastructure challenges that affect hospital operations. “The renovations will significantly improve patient flow, staff operations, and the overall delivery of care within the Major Peebles Wing.
This is a timely and much-needed investment in our healthcare system,” Dr Samuel said in the release. The contract was awarded through a national competitive bidding process. The government said the procurement reflected its commitment to transparency, accountability and responsible management of public funds.
For Road Town residents, the work promises better accessibility and a more efficient clinic environment at the territory’s main hospital. The RDA has overseen multiple post-recovery and improvement projects across the islands; officials said they will provide further updates as the Major Peebles Wing works progress and timelines are confirmed.
