Record Number of Teachers Depart BVI Public
Education Minister Sharie deCastro revealed that nearly 50 teachers, predominantly Belongers, exited the BVI public education system in 2023, marking the highest departure rate in recent years. This trend, attributed mainly to concerns over salaries, has prompted significant salary adjustments aimed at enhancing teacher retention.
The British Virgin Islands' education sector faced a significant challenge in 2023 as nearly 50 teachers left the public education system, with the majority being Belongers. This development was disclosed by Education Minister Sharie deCastro during a session in the House of Assembly, where she provided a detailed analysis of teacher departures over recent years.
According to deCastro, the year 2023 saw the largest exodus of educators in recent history, with 48 teachers leaving, compared to 33 in 2022 and an anticipated 32 by the end of 2024. The departures included both retirements and resignations, with a notable increase in retirements, including several principals, in 2023.
The trend of teacher resignations, however, has seen a decline, which deCastro attributes to the recent adjustments in teacher salaries. She emphasized that the adjustments, effective from January 2024, have positioned the BVI as offering some of the most competitive teacher compensation in the region.
This strategic move aims to address the long-standing grievances among teachers regarding low pay, inadequate school facilities, and a lack of resources. The minister highlighted that the main reason teachers left the system was salary concerns, alongside issues related to the physical state and safety of school infrastructures and the availability of educational resources.
These salary adjustments are part of a broader initiative to affirm the value of the teaching profession and its critical role in national development. By realigning compensation, the Education Ministry hopes to not only retain its current educators but also attract new talent to the public education system.
