The initiative aims to enhance multi-hazard early warning systems and facilitate rapid, coordinated emergency communications across the region. Disaster management personnel across the Caribbean have successfully concluded a specialized training workshop focused on the implementation of the Common Alerting Protocol. Among the graduates of the intensive program was British Virgin Islands Meteorologist Andrew Jackson, who represented the Department of Disaster Management throughout the regional sessions.
The Common Alerting Protocol, commonly known as CAP, serves as an internationally recognized standard format for emergency alerts and public warnings. The digital framework allows disaster management agencies to publish a single emergency message that is simultaneously distributed across multiple communication mediums, including mobile applications, television, radio, internet feeds, and automated sirens.
This standardized approach significantly minimizes delays and reduces confusion during rapidly developing crisis situations. The workshop was organized by the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service in close collaboration with the Caribbean Meteorological Organization and the World Meteorological Organization.
Crucial financial backing was provided through the Climate Risk and Early Warning Systems Caribbean Project 2.0, an international initiative committed to reinforcing early warning infrastructure across vulnerable island nations and territories. Given the territory's exposure to seasonal tropical cyclones, sudden severe weather, and other natural hazards, streamlined alert protocols ensure that the public receives clear, actionable guidance with minimal delay.
