RiteWay Shoppers Raise $1,000 for Literacy
Customers at RiteWay Food Markets have contributed $1,000 to support the Lions Club literacy drive and the BVI Book Tree program. The funds will help supply free books to children and young people across Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke. The community initiative continues to expand reading access and promote early literacy throughout the Virgin Islands.
RiteWay Food Markets shoppers have come together to raise $1,000 in support of youth literacy across the British Virgin Islands. The checkout donation initiative directly benefits the BVI Book Tree, an ongoing literacy campaign organized in partnership with local civic groups and community organizations.
The BVI Book Tree is designed to foster a love for reading by providing free books to children and young people ranging from infancy through age 16 and beyond. Since its launch in June 2023 through a collaboration between Nook BVI Ltd. and Unite BVI, the programme has worked steadily to encourage leisure reading and nurture early reading habits among the Territory's youth.
On Tortola, regular monthly book distribution events take place on the first Saturday of each month, complemented by ongoing community outreach activities. The initiative has since broadened its footprint across the sister islands, expanding its services into Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke to ensure no community is left out.
This territory-wide reach has been made possible through coordinated support from key partners, including Unite BVI, Nook BVI Ltd., the Valley Sound Lions Club, and the Anegada Beach Club. The collaborative effort aligns with the Lions Club of Tortola's ongoing commitment to local service under their theme, Service from the Heart, bringing community stakeholders together to ensure reading materials are accessible to all children.
Representatives from the Lions Club expressed sincere appreciation to RiteWay Food Markets and each customer whose checkout contributions made the donation possible. The collected funds will go directly toward purchasing and distributing books, helping young readers across the Virgin Islands build strong literacy foundations.
