The Robert A. Mathavious Memorial Trust has officially launched to support the prevention, relief, and treatment of kidney disease across the Virgin Islands. Established in honor of the late founding Managing Director and CEO of the BVI Financial Services Commission, the initiative aims to fund life-saving care, promote kidney transplantation, and assist affected families.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola — The work of the newly established Robert A. Mathavious Memorial Trust has officially begun, marking a major step forward in the fight against kidney disease across the Virgin Islands. The initiative honors the enduring legacy of Dr. Mathavious, OBE, LLD, the late founding Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the BVI Financial Services Commission (FSC), who passed away on September 14, 2025, at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida.
Mathavious quietly battled kidney disease for several years while maintaining his public duties and a positive outlook on life. The launch event brought together family members, community advocates, and government leaders, including Minister for Health and Social Development Hon. Wheatley, Junior Minister for Financial Services and Economic Development Hon.
Smith, and Junior Minister for Culture and Tourism Hon. Formally established under the laws of the Virgin Islands, the Trust was created to turn Dr. Mathavious's vision into actionable change. A central philosophy of the organization is that dialysis is not a cure, but rather a temporary bridge toward kidney transplantation.
Recognizing that conditions such as hypertension and diabetes contribute to high rates of renal disease across the Caribbean, the Trust is placing major emphasis on early screening and preventative education before kidney failure occurs. To address the substantial costs and emotional strain faced by patients, the Trust will provide direct financial support for dialysis, transplant procedures, specialized medications, transportation, and equipment.
The organization also plans to implement community screening programs, introduce kidney health education in local schools, offer family counseling, fund specialized training for local healthcare professionals, and strengthen the Territory's medical infrastructure. Structured as an irrevocable trust, the entity is managed by professional trustees and guided by a Protector Committee.
Public contributions and donations can be made by cheque or wire transfer payable to ATU General Trust (BVI) Limited as Trustees of the Robert A. The Trust marks another significant tribute to Dr. Mathavious's lifetime of service to the Territory, complementing earlier efforts such as the FSC Robert A.
