Rotary District 7020 Governor Lindsey John Cancino has arrived in the Virgin Islands, receiving a warm reception from government officials and local Rotarians as he begins an official multi-day visit running through September 5, 2026. Accompanied by his wife, Lesley Cancino, a past president of the Inner Wheel Club of East Nassau, along with members of their family, the Bahamian leader is visiting the Territory as part of a wider programme of engagement across the region during the 2026–2027 Rotary year.
Among the distinguished welcoming party greeting the delegation was Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Vincent O. Welcoming Mr Cancino and his wife on behalf of the Government of the Virgin Islands, Hon Wheatley invited the District Governor to visit Virgin Gorda, noting that a warm reception awaits them there.
Rotary Assistant Governor for the BVI, Past President Shan Mohamed, formally welcomed the delegation on behalf of the local Rotary family, expressing honor that the Territory was chosen so early in the District Governor's tenure. Other prominent figures offering words of welcome included Past District 7020 Governor Vance M.
Geluk, and BVI Tourist Board Niche Marketing Manager Lynette L. In response, Mr Cancino shared his delight at returning to the Virgin Islands, noting that he looks forward to reconnecting with old friends and learning firsthand about the accomplishments and initiatives of the local clubs.
The delegation's itinerary features key diplomatic and club engagements, including a special dinner hosted by His Excellency Daniel Pruce, Governor of the Virgin Islands. In addition, a major joint dinner meeting will bring together members from across the Territory's four clubs: the Rotary Club of Tortola, the Rotary Club of Road Town, the Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town, and the Rotary Club of Central Tortola.
The joint gathering provides a dedicated platform to evaluate club progress, engage directly with District leadership, and explore opportunities to expand Rotary's local service reach. A central component of the visit involves comprehensive tours of community initiatives across the islands and dedicated discussions with the Territory's youth arms, including the Rotaract, Interact, and EarlyAct programmes.
Mohamed noted that Rotary in the BVI continues to embody the ideal of 'Service Above Self' through projects supporting youth, schools, the environment, health and wellness, disaster preparedness, literacy, community beautification, and vulnerable residents. District Governor Cancino brings more than 35 years of Rotary service to his leadership role.
A longtime champion of global polio eradication, his background includes serving as District Rotary Foundation Chair, Assistant Governor for The Bahamas, and Zone 34 End Polio Now Coordinator. His distinguished career has earned him numerous accolades, including the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service, the Regional Polio Free World Hero recognition, the Rotary Foundation Distinguished Service Award, and the International Service Award for a Polio-Free World.
