Rough Seas, Strong Turnout at Poker Run
Despite strong winds and high seas on May 24, more than 45 vessels and over 500 participants took part in the 22nd Annual Leverick Bay Poker Run, one of the BVI’s largest charitable boating events. A post-event review corrected a prize ranking and organisers confirmed net proceeds will be distributed through the Virgin Gorda Charitable Trust to local causes including the Raw Skillz Track Club.
VIRGIN GORDA — Strong winds and rough sea conditions failed to stop boaters from taking part in the 22nd Annual Leverick Bay Poker Run on May 24, with organisers reporting more than 45 vessels and in excess of 500 participants. The long-running event remains one of the Territory’s most anticipated fundraisers and a staple of the Virgin Islands boating calendar.
Participants navigated a five-stop route that included Foxy’s Taboo, Pirate’s Bight, Oceans 7, Loose Mongoose and Leverick Bay, where the signature Mr. Nice Guy Fashion Show and prize-giving ceremony were held. Volunteer dealers recorded playing cards at each stop and specialised software later calculated the highest-ranking poker hands to determine prize winners.
A total of $15,000 in prize money was handed out, with $8,000 for first place, $4,000 for second and $3,000 for third. The results, however, were challenged after the ceremony when one participant disputed the ranking. The Poker Run committee conducted a 72-hour review and found several reporting errors at one stop.
While most discrepancies did not affect final placings, one error did change the standings and organisers confirmed the complainant had earned second place; a cheque for $4,000 will be issued to correct the payout. Organisers said the turnout under difficult marine conditions demonstrates the event’s enduring popularity and community spirit.
Net proceeds from the 2026 Poker Run will be distributed through the Virgin Gorda Charitable Trust and will benefit local initiatives including the Raw Skillz Track Club and other community groups. Since the event began in 2001, the Leverick Bay Poker Run has raised more than $200,000 for charities across the Territory.
For residents the Poker Run provides both fundraising and economic benefits: it supports grassroots organisations, showcases local businesses on the route, and brings visitors and boating enthusiasts to Virgin Gorda and neighbouring islands. Organisers also emphasised the importance of safety, noting challenging conditions on the day and thanking volunteer dealers, first responders and mariners for their role in running the event.
The committee has already announced the 23rd Annual Leverick Bay Poker Run will take place on May 30, 2027, giving locals and visitors alike time to plan for next year’s gathering.
