RVIPF Mourns Death of Veteran Sergeant Calvin
The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force is mourning the death of veteran officer Sergeant Calvin Cockburn, 50, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a September 9 omnibus crash in St. Vincent. Cockburn passed away at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, September 16, marking the first fatality from the incident.
Members of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) and the wider Virgin Islands community are mourning the tragic passing of Police Sergeant #148 Calvin Cockburn. The 50-year-old veteran law enforcement officer succumbed to injuries sustained in a vehicular collision while visiting his native homeland of St.
Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF), the accident took place at approximately 2:26 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9. A public transport omnibus, driven by 59-year-old Garvin Brown of Greiggs, was travelling along the La Croix public road towards the Mesopotamia Police Station when it plunged over an embankment.
The omnibus sustained extensive damage in the plunge. The driver, conductor, and all passengers aboard sustained varying degrees of injury. While the majority of those hurt were treated at the Levi Latham Health Centre and discharged, Brown and three passengers were admitted to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital for advanced care.
Cockburn, who was also a native of Greiggs, passed away at the hospital on Wednesday, September 16, becoming the crash's first recorded fatality. Vincent have not disclosed the exact number of passengers aboard the omnibus at the time of the collision, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash remain active.
Authorities have not yet indicated whether Cockburn's death will alter the scope of the probe or lead to additional charges. Sergeant Cockburn built an extensive policing career spanning more than two decades across the region. Prior to his relocation to the British Virgin Islands, he served with distinction in the RSVGPF.
He formally enlisted with the RVIPF on May 18, 2001, and earned promotion to the rank of sergeant in 2012. Over his 23 years of service in the territory, Cockburn undertook assignments across numerous key divisions. His deployments included frontline duties in the Beat and Patrol division, the East End/Long Look Police Station, and the Virgin Gorda and Anegada Police Division.
He also contributed significantly to specialized units, including the Special Investigations Unit, the Case Management Unit within the Police Prosecutions Office, the Major Incident Team, and most recently, the Criminal Investigations Department. In an official statement, the RVIPF remembered Cockburn as a knowledgeable, dedicated, and respectful officer whose mentorship and leadership left an indelible mark on his colleagues. "The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force joins the family, friends and loved ones of Police Sergeant #148 Calvin Cockburn in mourning his untimely passing," the Force stated. "His respectful approach to leadership and his commitment to developing those under his guidance were among the qualities that defined his service.
His service will be remembered, and his presence will not be forgotten." The loss has resonated deeply across regional law enforcement, coming as Sergeant Cockburn approached retirement after a lifetime of public service. The Commissioner of Police, senior management, and the entire ranks of the RVIPF have extended their heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues across the Caribbean.
