The BVI Financial Services Commission (FSC) has announced the creation of the Robert A. Mathavious Scholarship in honour of its late inaugural Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Robert A. Mathavious, OBE, who died in September 2025. The announcement was made on 9 December 2025 at a tribute event held at the H Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), where the FSC also awarded an education grant to Dr Mathavious’s daughter, Jadyn Mathavious, and made a separate donation to the Robert A.

Nearly 300 people attended the service, including Dr Mathavious’s widow Prudence Mathavious, government officials, industry leaders and former colleagues. FSC Managing Director and CEO Kenneth Baker said the scholarship reflects Dr Mathavious’s lifelong commitment to education and national development. “This is about investing in the future of the financial services industry, just as Mr Mac did throughout his career,” Baker said.

The scholarship will be tenable at the Robert Mathavious Institute for Financial Services at HLSCC and will cover tuition for three aspiring financial services professionals each year. The Commission said application details and eligibility criteria will be released in due course.

FSC Board Chairman Gerard Farara KC paid tribute to Dr Mathavious’s role in shaping the territory’s financial services sector, describing him as a leader whose “diplomatic, professional and interpersonal skills were central to building the Commission’s international reputation and credibility.” Speakers at the event highlighted Dr Mathavious’s influence as a key architect of the modern BVI financial services industry.

For BVI residents, the scholarship represents a targeted investment in local capacity-building. The financial services sector remains a cornerstone of the Territory’s economy, and scholarships that support professional training at HLSCC can help retain talent and provide a clearer pathway for young people into a high-skill industry.

The FSC’s move also underscores the ongoing partnership between regulators, educational institutions and the community to develop a pipeline of qualified professionals. Prospective applicants and interested stakeholders are advised to watch for the FSC’s announcement with application dates and requirements.

The tribute event and the scholarship together aim to preserve Dr Mathavious’s legacy by creating opportunities for future generations to contribute to the BVI’s financial services sector.
