Sea Cows Bay Emancipation Celebration
Organisers in Sea Cows Bay are hosting a Cultural Emancipation Celebration on a Tuesday in August, featuring traditional food, music, storytelling and a full day of community activities. The event will showcase local crafts, a Mango Medley tasting, plait pole demonstrations, donkey carriage rides and a programme of traditional races aimed at preserving and celebrating the village's heritage.
The Sea Cows Bay Heritage Group has announced a Cultural Emancipation Celebration slated for a Tuesday in August in the village of Sea Cows Bay on Tortola. Organisers say the day will be filled with cultural foods, family-friendly activities and demonstrations intended to rekindle memories of community life in earlier times and to showcase the area’s living traditions.
Visitors can expect a wide range of traditional dishes on offer, including goat head soup, peas soup, fried pot fish and Johnny cakes. Sweet treats listed by organisers include almond, ginger and coconut sugar cakes, guava cheese and an assortment of cakes, alongside a selection of local drinks.
A featured attraction will be the “Mango Medley,” where patrons can sample several free dishes that demonstrate the versatility of the island mango. The market element of the celebration will include plants and produce as well as locally made crafts. Herbs and fruit trees will be on sale, and artisans will offer handmade straw hats, straw bags and other straw products, giving residents a chance to support small producers and take home authentic BVI-made items.
Cultural performances and demonstrations form a large part of the day’s programme. The Dynamic Ribbon Dancers will present Plait Pole Dancing and a plait pole demonstration that will be open to anyone willing to try the traditional skill. Fungi music and story-telling music will play throughout the day, providing a soundtrack of local sound and song.
Family entertainment will include donkey carriage rides around the school and a programme of traditional races and contests: late for school (organisers remind participants to bring socks and tennis shoes), lime-and-spoon, sack race, three-legged race, bucket race, flat race and a bun-eating competition.
On display will be historical posters and memorabilia giving a snapshot of the past; this year’s posters will highlight Sea Cows Bay horse owners, jockeys, musicians and softball teams. Nibbs is scheduled to tell stories of life in Sea Cows Bay between musical sets. According to the Sea Cows Bay Heritage Committee, the event is intended as a community way to recognise the VI’s 192nd year of freedom from slavery and to strengthen local cultural ties.
Organisers encourage residents and visitors to attend, support local vendors and join in the activities. The celebration is presented as a community-focused, family-friendly occasion aimed at preserving heritage while offering a day of food, music and fun for all ages.
