Defending champions Set It Off kicked off their Virgin Gorda Summer Jam campaign with a hard-fought 73-68 victory over rivals Ice Connection. The weekend also featured a massive B League blowout by Skillful Ballers and a significant financial contribution to support local basketball.
Set It Off commenced their championship defense in strong fashion over the weekend, claiming a hard-fought 73-68 victory against rival contenders Ice Connection in the Virgin Gorda Summer Jam Basketball League. Dagou powered the Tortola-based squad to victory with a standout performance, finishing as the team's top scorer with 21 points alongside 9 rebounds.
Rhymer contributed valuable offensive support with 16 points. George anchored the squad in the paint, delivering a massive performance by pulling down 17 rebounds, blocking 6 shots, and adding 8 points of his own. Ice Connection mounted a spirited challenge led by Khalid S. Gerard, who produced a game-high 23 points and 7 rebounds in a losing effort.
Ahijaa Sweeney was the only other Ice Connection player to reach double figures on the scoresheet. Earlier in the schedule, fans witnessed a heavily lopsided B League encounter as Skillful Ballers completely dominated Just In Time, securing a massive 120-22 blowout victory. Zion Phillips led the charge for Skillful Ballers with a game-high 21 points, while five teammates also finished in double digits: Jayde Glasgow scored 18 points, Ke’Mori Daway added 16, Delanje Bedford and Jah-Shamanye Daniel each contributed 11, and Kishawn Martin finished with 10.
Morry Ollivierre paced Just In Time with 8 points in the tough defeat. Beyond the competitive action on the court, the league received a boost of community support as People's Leadership Movement (PLM) leader Mark H. Vanterpool presented a $5,000 donation cheque to the VG Summer Jam Basketball League organizers.
Action in the tournament is scheduled to resume this coming Friday and Saturday, promising another packed weekend of competitive basketball for sports fans across the Virgin Islands.
