A passing tropical wave is bringing an increased chance of showers to the Virgin Islands today alongside hazy skies from incoming Saharan dust. A small craft advisory remains in effect for local waters, with seas peaking near seven feet.
Residents across the British Virgin Islands can expect a mix of wet and hazy weather today as a tropical wave tracks across the region, according to the morning forecast issued by the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services and distributed by the Department of Disaster Management.
The passing tropical wave is generating elevated atmospheric moisture and instability, leading to periods of cloudiness and scattered rainfall. However, forecasters note that an influx of Saharan dust across the northeastern Caribbean will create hazy skies and may restrict precipitation primarily to brief passing showers throughout the area.
Skies throughout the daytime hours are anticipated to be partly cloudy to cloudy and noticeably hazy, with a 60 percent moderate chance of showers. Cloud cover and rain activity are projected to increase heading into the evening and overnight hours, with shower probabilities rising to 70 percent.
Marine conditions remain choppy, prompting authorities to maintain a small craft advisory across territorial waters. Open seas are forecast between 5 to 7 feet (1.5 to 2.1 meters). Winds will blow steadily from the east at 10 to 20 mph (17 to 31 km/h), with localized gusts potentially reaching up to 30 mph (48 km/h), especially in and around shower activity.
Sea bathers and small craft operators are strongly encouraged to exercise caution. The presence of Saharan dust may also impact local air quality. Residents with respiratory sensitivities, including asthma and sinus conditions, are advised to take necessary precautions while outdoors to manage potential irritation from airborne particulate matter.
