Sister Islands Ad-Hoc Cultural Groups Formed
The Department of Culture has established three ad-hoc cultural groups on Anegada, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke to work with the department on short-term cultural initiatives. Each group will serve for a three-month period and includes nominated community members from the respective islands.
The Government's Department of Culture has confirmed the formation of three Ad-Hoc Cultural Groups on the Sister Islands of Anegada, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke. The groups are intended to work closely with the department over a three-month period to advance short-term cultural initiatives and help safeguard and promote the unique heritage of each island.
The ad-hoc panels are expected to advise the Department of Culture on local priorities, assist with planning community events, identify opportunities for preserving traditions and historical sites, and strengthen cultural engagement between the Sister Islands and central government programmes.
The Department of Culture serves as the central agency for preserving, protecting and promoting the Virgin Islands' cultural traditions, and this initiative seeks to ensure the perspectives of Sister Islands residents are directly represented. Membership of the Ad-Hoc Cultural Groups is as follows: Anegada: Mr.
Myrtle Turnbull Each group will be active for three months, during which members will liaise with departmental staff to identify immediate cultural needs and opportunities specific to their islands. The short-term nature of the committees suggests the department is aiming for quick, consultative work that can inform ongoing or future programming across the territory.
For BVI residents, particularly those on the Sister Islands, the initiative offers a channel for local voices to influence cultural activities, festival planning, conservation efforts and potential funding priorities that affect their communities.
