Students Secure $100K in Vanterpool Scholarships
The MHV BVI Group has expanded its tertiary scholarship fund to $100,000 to assist Virgin Islands students pursuing higher education. Named in honour of veteran educator Judith E. Vanterpool, the initiative will distribute financial awards over the next two years to support local scholars.
Young scholars across the Virgin Islands are set to receive crucial financial backing for their tertiary studies after the MHV BVI Group expanded its University Scholarship Program fund to $100,000. Successful applicants are receiving their official award letters this week, securing vital assistance for their higher education pursuits over the next two years.
The initiative originally began with a $50,000 pledge earlier this year, initially conceived with a specific focus on supporting students from Virgin Gorda. However, Chairman Mark Vanterpool and the group's leadership chose to double the financial commitment to $100,000 in subsequent months to broaden the programme's reach to deserving candidates throughout the entire territory.
Following a thorough evaluation process after the July 31 application deadline, recipients were selected based on their academic dedication and merit. The scholarship fund bears the name of co-founder Judith E. Vanterpool, who has contributed more than 50 years to education across various levels in the Virgin Islands.
Both Mark and Judith Vanterpool share extensive backgrounds in teaching, and the fund reflects an enduring commitment to advancing education and youth empowerment. Alongside the scholarship programme, the MHV BVI Group routinely mentors and employs young people through its annual summer job training initiative.
To retain their awards, scholarship recipients will be required to maintain satisfactory academic standing and submit official transcripts on a semester or quarterly basis throughout their studies. The program aims to alleviate the financial burdens of university education while encouraging local talent to pursue diverse professional fields.
Judith Vanterpool emphasised that the initiative is an investment in the territory's long-term prosperity. She noted that beyond the financial assistance, the awards serve as a powerful message of belief in what these students can accomplish, expressing optimism that the scholars will return their skills and knowledge to build a stronger Virgin Islands.
