Suspect Arrested in Fatal USVI Shooting
Authorities in the United States Virgin Islands have taken a suspect into custody following a fatal shooting in St. Croix. The victim, identified as Pedro Melendez Sanes, was pronounced dead at the scene near a Sion Farm service station. The incident pushes the neighbouring territory's homicide tally for the year to 24.
A suspect is currently in police custody following a deadly shooting incident in Sion Farm, St. Croix, authorities in the United States Virgin Islands have confirmed. According to Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) Director of Communications Glen Dratte, the incident took place at approximately 7:07 p.m.
Croix 911 Emergency Call Center received an automated alert from the ShotSpotter detection system, which was immediately accompanied by multiple calls from residents reporting gunfire in the vicinity of a nearby service station. Officers from the VIPD, along with Emergency Medical Services personnel and other first responders, were dispatched quickly to the area.
Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered an unresponsive adult male suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased has since been officially identified as Pedro Melendez Sanes. Police confirmed that a suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident, though details regarding the suspect's identity and potential motive have not yet been made public.
This latest fatal shooting brings the total homicide count in the United States Virgin Islands to 24 for the year. According to VIPD statistics provided by Dratte, St. Thomas has recorded 13 homicides, while St. Violent crime trends in the neighboring USVI remain an area of close observation for law enforcement and residents across the Virgin Islands archipelago, where tight-knit familial ties and inter-island travel connect the communities of both territories.
The VIPD stated that the case remains under active investigation and additional updates will be provided as more details are confirmed.
