Suspect Escapes Custody on Virgin Gorda
A man arrested on Virgin Gorda reportedly escaped custody while being processed at the island’s police station, injuring two female officers in the incident. Investigations are ongoing and it is unclear whether the suspect has been re-apprehended.
A man arrested in the Hazel Point area of Virgin Gorda escaped custody while being processed at the island’s police station earlier this week, BVI News understands. According to sources, officers initially responded to a report in Hazel Point and informed the suspect of an allegation against him before arresting him on suspicion of possessing stolen items.
The suspect was taken to the Virgin Gorda Police Station for processing. It is alleged that, while at the station, the man forced his way out of custody. Reports indicate he pushed several officers to the ground, broke through the front door of the station and ran into nearby bushes.
Some officers pursued him but were unable to catch him, and the suspect’s whereabouts remain unknown at the time of publication. Our sources say two female officers sustained bodily injuries during the incident. It is not clear whether they were hospitalised or have since returned to duty.
As of publication, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force had not issued a public statement to BVI News. The escape has prompted an internal investigation by police, and residents on Virgin Gorda have expressed concern about public safety in the close-knit community. Virgin Gorda is one of the Territory’s smaller islands, where police resources and personnel are more limited than on Tortola.
Incidents of this nature can strain local policing capacity and raise questions about custody procedures at smaller stations. Police investigators will be reviewing how the escape occurred and whether any procedural or security lapses contributed. Neighbourhood vigilance will be important while the search continues.
Residents are asked to report any sightings or information that may assist the police investigation. Anyone with information should contact the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force immediately. BVI News will update readers when the police release further details or if the suspect is apprehended.
