A police officer dove into nearby bushes after a 16-year-old allegedly brandished a firearm during a chase following an attempted break-in in Meyers Estate, BVI News understands. According to multiple sources, officers responded to a report that someone had tried to force entry into a woman’s apartment.
The suspect, a teenager who lives in Fat Hog’s Bay on Tortola, was spotted by police riding a motor scooter. Sources say he abandoned the scooter when confronted and fled on foot. During the pursuit the teen allegedly drew a handgun and pointed it at officers. No shots were fired, but one officer reportedly dived into nearby bushes to avoid being struck.
The youth escaped at the time, and a search that night did not turn up the firearm, sources say. The following day officers say they saw the same young man walking along a roadway in the Meyers Estate area. When approached he tried to flee but was detained and taken to the station.
In the presence of his mother, the teenager reportedly admitted to both the attempted break-in and to pointing the gun at the officer. Sources told BVI News the youth offered to show police where he had hidden the gun and other items. Officers recovered clothing and other objects linked to the incident, but the firearm itself was not found.
Investigations remain ongoing, and it is unclear whether the juvenile remains in custody or will be formally charged and brought before court. The incident has heightened community concern about a recent rise in burglaries, armed robberies and episodes involving youths carrying weapons.
Neighbours and residents have been vocal on social media and in community groups, urging more visible policing and swift action to curb violent incidents. Police officials say they are intensifying patrols across all neighbourhoods as they investigate the matter, and they have urged residents to report suspicious activity and preserve evidence when safe to do so.
