A sweeping reform proposal has been put forward outlining ten strategic objectives aimed at strengthening local infrastructure, governance, and public welfare across the British Virgin Islands. The blueprint addresses longstanding community concerns, ranging from high living costs and legal representation to agricultural sustainability and public accountability.
At the core of the proposal is a call to overhaul the local justice and public service systems. Key recommendations include establishing a dedicated public defender system to ensure legal representation for low-income residents, moving away from incarceration for non-violent matters such as unpaid child support, and removing the power of politicians to set their own salaries.
Instead, public arbitration is recommended to establish compensation for elected officials and civil servants transparently. Economic resilience and local empowerment also feature heavily in the proposed objectives.
