Residents across the Virgin Islands are being advised to prepare for unsettled weather over the next 24 hours as a relatively active tropical wave moves across the northeastern Caribbean. The system is set to bring increased moisture and atmospheric instability, leading to periods of moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms across the territory.
According to the morning forecast issued by the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services and shared by the Department of Disaster Management, skies will start off partly cloudy before turning increasingly overcast. Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate primarily after midday, with shower and thunderstorm activity picking up in coverage and intensity throughout the afternoon.
The unsettled conditions are projected to continue into the night, with forecasters noting a very high probability of overnight rain. Some of these showers could be moderate to locally heavy at times and accompanied by thunder and lightning. Overall rainfall accumulations across the islands are forecast to range between 1 and 2 inches, or 25.4 to 50.8 millimeters, which could lead to ponding on roadways and minor runoff in low-lying areas.
Winds will generally blow from the east at speeds between 7 and 18 miles per hour. However, residents living in elevated terrains and motorists traveling during heavier downpours should anticipate sudden gusts reaching up to 29 miles per hour. Marine conditions will also be moderately choppy throughout the forecast period, with wave heights expected between 4 and 6 feet.
Small craft operators and sea bathers are urged to exercise caution when navigating coastal waters and open seas. Local authorities remind the public that conditions can change rapidly during the passage of tropical waves.
