Tropical Wave Brings Showers And Thunderstorms
A passing tropical wave is generating unsettled weather across the British Virgin Islands, bringing showers, thunderstorms, and rainfall up to one inch. Marine conditions remain hazardous, with a small craft advisory in effect due to rough seas reaching up to eight feet.
Residents and visitors across the British Virgin Islands should prepare for wet and unsettled weather today as moisture and atmospheric instability associated with an active tropical wave move through the northeastern Caribbean. According to the latest forecast from the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services, disseminated by the BVI Department of Disaster Management (DDM), the territory will see partly cloudy skies quickly transitioning to increasingly cloudy conditions accompanied by widespread showers and scattered thunderstorms.
Expected rainfall totals are projected to reach between 5 to 25 millimeters (0.2 to 1.0 inch), which could lead to localized ponding on roadways and in low-lying areas. Unsettled conditions are forecast to linger into the overnight hours. The outlook for tonight calls for partly cloudy skies with a moderate 60 percent chance of continued shower activity across the islands.
Marine conditions remain particularly hazardous as the tropical wave traverses the region. Winds are forecast to blow from the east at speeds between 15 and 30 kilometers per hour (9 to 18 miles per hour). Wave heights are expected to range between 1.8 and 2.4 meters (6 to 8 feet).
Consequently, a small craft advisory remains firmly in effect for coastal waters surrounding the Virgin Islands. The DDM advises mariners, particularly operators of small craft, commercial fishermen, and recreational boaters, to exercise extreme caution or avoid venturing into open waters until conditions improve.
Beachgoers are also urged to remain vigilant regarding rough surf and strong rip currents. Sunset across the territory is scheduled for 6:25 p.m. this evening, with sunrise tomorrow slated for 6:05 a.m. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to local weather advisories and official bulletins throughout the day.
