Turnbull: Love Unites NDP Team
On May 18, 2026, Deputy Chair Hon. Melvin M. Turnbull joined NDP colleagues on NDP Radio (ZBVI 780 AM) to stress unity, experience and a focus on opportunities for young people across the Virgin Islands. Turnbull said the party's diversity of backgrounds and combined public- and private-sector experience positions the NDP to plan for the Territory’s future as it seeks to repair its image ahead of the next general election.
Turnbull said what unites members of the National Democratic Party (NDP) is their love for the Virgin Islands and a shared commitment to leadership and planning for the Territory’s future. Speaking on NDP Radio on ZBVI 780 AM on Monday, May 18, 2026—the first episode since the party’s internal elections earlier this month—Turnbull joined NDP Chairman and Leader of the Opposition Hon.
Skelton (AL) to outline the party’s priorities and personnel strengths. “Every person within this team has different strengths, different backgrounds, different experiences, but I believe what unites us is the love for the Virgin Islands,” Turnbull said, noting the party includes fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, young professionals and community leaders who “genuinely care and understand the people they aspire to lead.” Turnbull emphasised the breadth of experience within the party, citing years of service in the House of Assembly and careers in the private sector.
Skelton’s achievements with his family business and past service as Deputy Chief Minister and as a HoA member, and praised Hon. Penn’s tenure as Minister of Health during a challenging period that included the threat of suspension of the constitution, as well as Penn’s background in information technology and current role as Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition.
On his own record, Turnbull highlighted experience in finance, business, marketing and mentoring, and said the party must make room for younger leaders. “We have to not only talk about the involvement of young people but ensure a space is provided for them while building on the shoulders of the foreparents and persons who came before,” he said, adding that senior figures like Hon.
Skelton will continue to guide the next generation. Turnbull stressed the party’s focus on planning and keeping people at the centre of its work. He framed the effort as collective rather than individual: “This is not about any individual or individual group, but about the NDP.” The remarks come as the NDP works to repair its public image following internal disputes and prepare for the next general elections.
For many residents, the issues Turnbull raised—youth opportunities, experienced leadership, and clear planning—will be key measures as parties vie for voter confidence in the lead-up to the vote.
