Upcoming Mosquito Fogging Operations in Tortola Announced
The Ministry of Health and Social Development has scheduled mosquito fogging exercises across various Tortola locations on August 29 and 30, aiming to reduce mosquito populations and prevent disease spread. Residents with respiratory issues are advised to avoid fogged areas temporarily.
Residents of Tortola can expect mosquito fogging operations to take place on the evenings of August 29 and 30, as announced by the Ministry of Health and Social Development. This initiative, led by the Vector Control Unit of the Environmental Health Division, is part of ongoing efforts to manage mosquito populations and mitigate the spread of mosquito-borne diseases within the community.
The fogging schedule targets a wide range of areas across Tortola, including Frenchman’s Cay, West End, Zion Hill, and many others on August 29, followed by Manuel Reef, Duffs Bottom, Slaney Hill, among additional locations on August 30. These operations are slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. on both days, weather permitting.
The ministry advises individuals, especially those with respiratory conditions such as asthma, to stay clear of the fogged zones for at least an hour after the treatment to avoid potential health issues. The public is also encouraged to play a role in controlling mosquito populations by examining their properties for any objects that could accumulate water and serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Suggestions include covering, meshing, discarding, or overturning any receptacles capable of holding water. In the event of rain or high winds, the fogging exercises will be postponed to ensure the effectiveness of the operations and the safety of the public. These preventive measures are crucial in reducing the risk of diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, such as Dengue fever, Zika virus, and Chikungunya, all of which have had instances in the region.
This announcement comes alongside other community-focused initiatives by the Ministry of Health and Social Development, including rewards for environmental stewardship and educational programs aimed at increasing public awareness about environmental health issues. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the fogging schedule and to take the necessary precautions to protect their health and contribute to the community's well-being.
