The Ministry of Health and Social Development has scheduled mosquito fogging exercises across various Tortola locations on August 31 and September 1, starting at 5:30 p.m. This initiative by the Vector Control Unit aims to reduce mosquito breeding and protect community health.
In an effort to combat mosquito breeding and prevent vector-borne diseases, the Vector Control Unit of the Environmental Health Division, under the Ministry of Health and Social Development, has announced an upcoming mosquito fogging schedule for Tortola. The fogging exercises are set to take place on Sunday, August 31, and Monday, September 1, beginning each day at 5:30 p.m.
The targeted areas include Manchester, Greenland, Lambert Estate, Balsam Ghut, Hawk Nest, Shepherd’s Hill, Parham Town, The Sound, Chapel Hill, Thomas Land, Ballast Bay, Cane Garden Bay, Soldier Hill, Round Hill, Meyers, Green Bank, Todman’s Estate, Spooner’s Estate, Fahie Hill, Long Trench, Cooten Bay, Rogue’s Bay, George’s Northside, Harrigan Estate, Doty, and Chalwell.
Residents, especially those with respiratory illnesses such as asthma, are advised to vacate the areas being fogged for at least an hour to avoid potential health risks. The Vector Control Unit also encourages community members to take proactive measures in reducing mosquito breeding sites on their properties by covering, meshing, discarding, or turning over any containers that can collect water.
This initiative is a crucial part of the government's ongoing efforts to protect public health by controlling the mosquito population and preventing the spread of diseases such as Zika, dengue, and chikungunya. In case of inclement weather conditions like rain or high winds, the fogging exercises will be postponed to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the process.
