Woman Arrested for Dui After Striking Police
A woman has been arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) following a collision with a police unit in St. Croix, USVI. The incident, which resulted in vehicle damage but no reported injuries, occurred when the suspect failed to navigate a turn correctly and collided with the stationary police vehicle.
In a concerning event that unfolded on the evening of Tuesday, August 26, 2025, the USVI Police Department reported a collision involving a civilian vehicle and a police unit on St. Croix, leading to the arrest of the driver for driving under the influence (DUI). At approximately 8:53 p.m., the 911 Emergency Call Center was alerted to the accident, which occurred when the police vehicle, traveling north, had stopped on the bypass, only to be struck by a westbound vehicle attempting to turn onto the same road.
The driver, identified as Vasquez, collided with the police unit while it was within its lane, causing damage to both vehicles involved. Upon arrival at the scene, officers from the Traffic Investigation Bureau encountered Vasquez and noted a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emanating from her person.
Subsequent field sobriety tests, which included the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Test, the Walk and Turn Test, and the One Leg Stand Test, were administered, with Vasquez failing all three, confirming suspicions of impaired driving. Following these findings, Vasquez was arrested, processed, and advised of her Miranda rights.
Her bail was set at $1,005.00, adhering to chart guidelines. Instead of posting bail, Vasquez opted to surrender her Virgin Islands driver's license. This incident raises concerns about road safety and the dangers of impaired driving, reminding the community of the critical importance of adhering to traffic laws and the potential consequences of driving under the influence.
The USVI Police Department continues to urge residents and visitors alike to practice safe driving habits and to think twice before getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, in order to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of all road users.
